Beginning in 2010, the blue Army Service Uniform , previously used as a formal dress uniform, displaced the green Class A uniform as the daily wear service uniform. This move proved unpopular, and in 2018 a new Army Green Service Uniform modeled after World War II-era officers garrison uniforms was announced. By 2028 all soldiers will be wearing the green ASU as office attire. The blue uniform will remain the ceremonial and formal dress uniform. In 1926, the previous stand collar service coat was replaced with an open-collared coat worn with a collared shirt and tie, and in 1937 breeches were replaced with straight-legged trousers.

The uniform is intended for seasonal hot weather wear only and is not appropriate for wear outside of hot climates. Local commanders will determine the conditions for wear of this uniform. From the time of the New Model Army broad-brimmed Flemish hats were worn. After the restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 Monmouth Cap, a broad-brimmed, low-crowned felt hat, with one side of the brim generally turned up, was introduced. There will be no cost for new recruits as it will be part of their initial issue. Recruiters and drill sergeants will receive a voucher for supplemental issues. All Active Component enlisted Soldiers will receive the annual clothing allowance to offset the cost. Part of the cost of this uniform will be offset by extending the life of the ACU and ASU as Soldiers wear the pink and green uniform in business environments. Commanders may authorize the wear of the Mountain Combat Boots issued at RFI for wear with Operation Enduring Freedom-Camouflage Pattern and OCP.

This trend began with the Marines who were unwilling to share the design -- so much so that USMC was interwoven into the pattern to prevent other branches adopting it outright.
