There are common threads woven in the flag of our Nation and the dress blue uniform of our Marines. Sewn from the ideals America stands for and the resolve our Marines fight with, this is the only uniform in the U.S. military designated to include the red, white, and blue colors of the American flag. The distinctive dress blue uniform Marines wear represents the values Marines live, and has origins dating back to the American Revolution. Dress blues are worn for many events, including ceremonies with foreign officials, visits with U.S. civil officials, and formal social functions attended in an official capacity. Wherever Marines wear this uniform, they do so proudly, standing united as the moral fiber that forms the fabric of our Nation.

Comparison with the Army
Marines are also taught that the scarlet “blood stripe” that runs down the seam of each trouser leg was created in honor of the Marines who fell in the Battle of Chapultepec during the Mexican War in 1847. Every unit on base stood at parade rest on the parade deck and listened as the ceremony droned on. We then got to the time when the outgoing general would address the base and thank everyone from his kindergarten teacher to his Vacation Bible School counselor in 3rd grade. Scarlet and gold were established as the official colors of the Corps as early as 1925, and the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor emblem has appeared as part of Marine Corps iconography since 1868. Marine sergeants have carried swords from the earliest days of the Corps, and used them in the field through the Civil War. The first officially specified NCO sword was issued by Commandant Archibald Henderson in 1826. The current Marine NCO sword, carried for parade and ceremony by enlisted Marines above the rank of corporal, was authorized by the sixth commandant of the Marine Corps, Colonel John Harris.

Among current uniforms in the U.S. military, the dress uniforms of the Marine Corps have been in service the longest. This is identical to Evening Dress A except men wear a scarlet waistcoat or cummerbund , and women may wear a short skirt. For those who “Aim High … Fly-Fight-Win,” the dress uniforms of the U.S.
Swords or cutlasses are authorized for wear by officers and Chief Petty Officers and may be required for Lt. Commander and above. Marines wear boots only with the utility uniform, while certain airborne-qualified and ceremonial Army units are authorized to wear shined black boots with service/dress uniforms. Both services make exceptions for boots with other working uniforms, such as coveralls, aviation, and cold weather uniforms. The service uniform consists of green and khaki colors. The present service uniform of the USMC for enlisted Marines was adopted in 1943 making it the oldest service uniform still in use by the United States armed forces.

Green cartridge belts or brassards can be worn by personnel in an authoritative or ceremonial duty status , wearing such items regards the individuals as "under arms" whether they are actually carrying a weapon or not. During ceremonies, officers have the option of wearing a Sam Browne belt and the Mameluke sword, and Noncommissioned Officers may wear the NCO sword. Various organizational clothing items may be worn with the utility uniform during inclement or cold weather, to include the All Purpose Environmental Clothing System parka and trousers, the Combat Desert Jacket, or rain poncho. The variety worn depends on the environment; deployed Marines wear whichever color is more appropriate to the climate and terrain.
As a Marine recruit, I was taught that each element of a Marine’s dress uniform is directly linked to the Corps’ heritage and combat legacy. If you work in law enforcement, EMS, or security, we have uniforms for you too. Even if you don’t need a specific uniform for your job or hobbies, our tactical pants and other clothes are useful for a wide variety of tasks and daily wear. These uniforms are the most formal and have the most variation. For officers, these include Dinner Dress Blue and Dinner Dress White, Dinner Dress Blue Jacket and Dinner Dress White Jacket, and Formal Dress.
Because the Blue Dress uniform is considered formal wear, Blue Dress “C” and “D” are rarely worn. The main exceptions are Marine recruiters and Marine Security Guards, who wear the “C” and “D” in warm weather, and Marine One pilots in place of a flight suit. Finally, I want to talk about how the dress blues make you feel on the inside.

A recently married bride was not about to put up with the attention diversion created by one peacocking Marine who decided to partake in the matrimonial festivities donned in his dress blues. The Blue-White Dress uniform is similar to the Blue Dress uniform, except the trousers, skirt or slacks are white instead of blue and do not sport scarlet stripes. Often worn in the summer, this uniform is similar to the regular Mess Uniform. However, it features a white mess jacket and black high-waisted trousers.
